Season 38 of Survivor is introducing a new twist to the game never done before: Edge of Extinction. Jeff Probst (the show’s host) describes it as, “a secret in the beginning. Nobody knows.” Players voted off after the third day have a choice to leave the game or go to the Edge of Extinction. From there, it will resemble Redemption Island and the players will battle their way back into the game for the merge.
Although this new twist already has Survivor junkies on their toes, even more exciting is the return of four fan favorites. Among the returners is David Wright, Aubry Bracco, Joe Anglim, and Kelley Wentworth. Today we are going to do an overview of David and how we think he will impact the game his second season.
First, let’s have a quick recap about David’s last season on Survivor Millennials vs. Gen X. David was at risk for being voted on the first Tribal Council of the season. He was annoying and scared of his own shadow. With this image, he quickly found himself on the bottom of the tribe. But, as the game went on he developed into a new, more confident David, who would end up creating many memorable moments in Survivor history. In his game he found two idols, flipped the game around twice when on the bottom, and even perfectly timed a well-made fake idol. But, with all of this he was obviously a huge threat and was back stabbed by his number one alliance member Ken McNickle. On day 38, one day short of Final Tribal (and a great chance of winning), he was sent home.
What we can tell from this is that David will look to play a very strategic game and may come out underrated. Remember his fake idol he made? Pretty epic, huh? Well it turns out David is planning on taking the idea of a fake idol a bit further. In his pre-season interview with ET Canada, he reveals that he hopes to create a fake advantage! (For interview click here) This would make Survivor history and probably have an impact on future seasons. He also mentions that he can make fire in as little as 20 seconds (for final fire making challenge) and that he is determined to make it to day 39. David mentions in more detail about his fake advantage on this web page by The Hollywood Reporter. A podcast with David’s full pre-season interview along with the other returners’ is also on this page. (I highly recommend listening to it!)
Overall at The Infinity Torch, we are very excited to see David Wright play again along with Joe, Kelley, and Aubry. The biggest troubles we think he may encounter is the fact that is an already threat with only three other returners, he may be seen as a weak competitor for his tribe, and/or the fact that his major growth story from his first season won’t be nearly as impacting the second time around. Despite these obstacles, we hope David will make it far in the game!
